Adult
Summer School
Sunday
3rd - Friday 8th August 2008
The
Adult Summer School sets out to give people the opportunity
to explore their artistic potential within an enthusiastic
and sympathetic environment. They will be given the
chance to perform to each other and in public, and to
investigate the elements of backstage work and preparation
which go toward putting together an end-of-course Show
Case. The band element is formulated to
work independently both as a large band and in smaller
groups, and to complement the vocal section in its singing
projects.
Ella
May Toe-Tappers
Explore a tremendous variety of styles with the "Ella
May Toe-Tappers!!"
Music is arranged to suit the inclination and ability
of the players and could include styles such as swing
& big-band through Santana, Average White Band,
Blues Brothers, Latin-American to Bernstein.
There are opportunities to develop Musicianship skills
such as improvisation, ensemble tone-quality & intonation
in Workshop sessions in which players receive, where
appropriate, more individual attention. Members can
form smaller bands, if they wish, which can be provided
with music, coaching, or simply an informal concert
platform.
Singers are also invited to sing with the band, which
gives the opportunity to play some great show-tunes.
Playing time is spread evenly over the week in order
to avoid taxing less experienced instrumentalists, while
giving the more ambitious players more practice/rehearsal
time. Band members are also given the option to experience
some of the workshops held in drama/music theatre
sound/lighting technology, make-up, drama improvisation,
singing, and percussion thereby broadening their
horizons and allowing them to mingle with other course
members.
Previous band experience is not necessary but, with
the exception of drummers & guitarists, the ability
to read music is important.
Sing
& Swing
The Vocal course is designed to cater for singers of
all ages, abilities, and energy levels! All members
take part in voice-training classes, which cover breathing,
body-awareness, improvisation, "harmonising",
microphone technique, and over-coming nerves in public
performing. A workshop-style presentation is featured
in the Final Concert (in previous years students have
studied film music, African, Jazzy, chart hits &
West-End Musicals).
In addition to this, students get the opportunity to
sing with the band, and to explore a variety of styles
of singing, ranging from swing, R&B & gospel
to soul & rock, according to the inclination of
the course members.
Specialised Music Theatre classes may work with appropriate
choreography, so that previously there has been the
opportunity to take part in Lindy-Hop, Hip-hop, Rock
n Roll & Latin-American dance.
Students are also able to take part in many of the aspects
offered in workshops of the other Departments, and have
the chance to study sound technology, lighting design,
hair & make-up, & prop/costume/set-design. Try
as little or as much as you like!
Footlights
The Acting Course is a lively and energetic one. Sketches
& extracts are worked on, which have previously
included classics, comedy and improvised material. Students
cover many aspects of acting styles through the pieces,
which are then selected to appear in the Showcase on
the final night.
Specialist workshops are provided in improvisation,
comedy, mime & stage-fighting, & opportunities
sometimes arise for budding directors or script-writers
to home in on these talents. They can also choose training
in an array of workshops to be able to deal with costumes,
props, make-up, hair, lighting, scenery and backstage
work according to their individual preferences. The
Acting students have, on previous courses, had a reputation
for their extrovert, spontaneous & hilarious extra-curricular
creativity.
Technical / Audio Visual element
Audio-Visual Arts will support the other courses by
providing Video & Audio workshops. Among other things
singers will gain experience with microphone technique
and actors with video & TV. It is hoped that with
sufficient demand this element will expand in future
years to become a main course element.
Additional
training
To enhance the musical and theatrical elements of the
course, we are pleased to be able to offer complementarystudies
in set design, stage make-up and costume - and prop
making. Circus skills and stage fighting have
also been provided on past courses by visiting tutors.
First aiders and a qualified life-guard will also be
present.
